Goonies, The: Sequel in Works, Produced by Spielberg

Warner has hired Potsy Ponciroli to write the script for the sequel to The Goonies, 40 years after the original movie hit theaters back in 1985.

Spielberg, Kristie Macosko Krieger and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin Entertainment alongside Chris Columbus, who wrote the original “Goonies” script. Lauren Shuler Donner will exec produce.

There is no director attached to the sequel yet, and there are no plot details revealed yet.

Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Corey Feldman, Ke Huy Quan and Martha Plimpton all starred in the original 1985 movie about a group of kids who find an ancient map to hidden treasure.

Directed by Richard Donner and produced by Spielberg, “The Goonies” made $125 million worldwide at the box office from a budget of just $19 million.

It’s gone on to become a cult classic and was selected to be preserved in the National Registry by the Library of Congress in 2017.

After starring in “The Goonies” as a child, Quan has had a career resurgence thanks to his Oscar-winning performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and a role in the Marvel and Disney+ series “Loki.”

He talked about a “Goonies” reunion at the “Love Hurts” world premiere, where his co-star Feldman joined him at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood: “It’s one of the most asked questions in my life. I would love for it to happen.”

Feldman added, “All I can say is, get us all together. Everybody is looking good. Sean’s looking good. Josh is looking good. We’re all looking good still, and we’re all alive. Goonies never say die…There’s hope.”
