We don’t hear Brando’s Don Corleone in Coppola’s masterpiece The Godfather talk for three minutes. We also don’t see his face for nearly three minutes!

The striking and elegant camera movement and blocking, lighting techniques, and Brando’s superbly subtle acting makes the opening indelible.

Instead of showing his power, The Godfather is schooling Bonasera in respect and decency. Yet, in the end, he holds a favor over the man’s head.

Don Corleone is a man of great power and principle, who has mercy but, under the right circumstances, can be merciless.

The scene assumes greater meaning, when it is revealed that it’s a special day for the Don, his daughter’s wedding,
