Gloria, a biopic about controversial Mexican pop icon Gloria Trevi, has landed a U.S. distribution deal with Picturehouse.
Often called the “Mexican Madonna” for her provocative lyrics and edgy performances in the 1990s, Trevi’s career came crashing down in the late ’90s after she and her former manager were accused of luring young girls into a cult-like pornographic ring. Trevi went on the lam and was later arrested in Brazil, where she was held in a prison there for more than four years.
She was released in 2004 when a court found her innocent on charges of kidnapping, rape and corruption of minors.
Trevi returned to Mexico and staged a successful career comeback.
“Gloria Trevi’s meteoric rise to fame and her amazing downfall is portrayed in this fascinating film about love, fame and betrayal,” said Picturehouse CEO Bob Berney.
Mexico’s Matthias Ehrenberg (Before Night Falls) shares producer credits with Academy Award winner Barrie Osborne and Alan B. Curtiss (Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World). Gloria is Swiss director Christian Keller‘s first feature.
