GAYLA and Queer Cinema Today
This year’s selection of LGBTQ films featured in the GAYLA and Queer Cinema Today sections include a mix of U.S. and international entries from India, Ireland/UK, France/Spain/Portugal and Canada.
My Book:
The picks included the romantic comedy A Nice Indian Boy, which tells the story of an Indian man who introduces his white fiancé to his conservative parents. The family must navigate traditional values while planning the perfect traditional Indian wedding for the two men.
Another notable film is Four Mothers, which follows a gay novelist who unexpectedly finds himself caring for four eccentric, combative, and wildly different women while his friends head off to a Pride weekend celebration.
I’m Your Venus explores the 1988 murder of Venus Xtravaganza, who was featured in the landmark 1990 documentary Paris Is Burning. The film follows her three brothers attempting to reopen the unsolved case.
(Xtravaganza) came from a New Jersey family and had three brothers who appear to be sort of macho New Jersey guys, but they loved her and they team up with her voguing family to reexamine her murder and get her chosen name put on her gravestone.
