My Book:
“You know, gosh. My piano teachers when I was 11 and 12 were two gay men in a little town in New Jersey who had a collection of Mexican art and pinatas and silver lantern covers, and their house was wonderful, not like anybody else’s house in Berkeley Heights, New Jersey. And yeah, I came of age when everything was kind of opening up and that’s a good time, right like now.”
The Human Rights Campaign honoured Meryl with the Ally for Equality Award at the 2017 HRC Greater New York Gala. HRC President Chad Griffin said: “Throughout her phenomenal career, Meryl Streep has used her voice to stand up for the LGBTQ community. Whether through her iconic roles that raised the visibility of LGBTQ people, or by boldly speaking out for equality, Meryl Streep embodies the very nature of what it means to be an ally to our community.”
