Director Anna Rose Holmer‘s The Fits centers on Toni (Royalty Hightower), a tomboy of 11 who is bewitched by the dance team she sees practicing in the Cincinnati gymnasium where she boxes.
Enamored by the power and confidence of the strong community of girls, Toni spends less and less time boxing with her older brother, and instead eagerly absorbs the dance routines and masters drills from a distance, even piercing her own ears in an effort to fit in.
However, when a mysterious outbreak of fainting spells plagues the team, Toni’s desire for acceptance becomes more complicated.
Made of visceral images set to a mesmerizing score, Homer’s impressive feature debut offers a transfixing sensory experience and a potent portrait of adolescent turmoil.
