Hollywood on Hollywood
The Fabulous Allan Carr (2017)
Jeffrey Schwarz’s documentary about the larger-than-life producer of “Grease” and Broadway’s “La Cage aux Folles” doesn’t shy away from Carr’s foibles, or eccentricities (like love of caftans), while celebrating his flair for promotion and zest for showbiz.
Indeed, Carr’s most notorious flop, one that haunted him for years, was his pairing of Rob Lowe and Snow White at the 1989 Oscars.
Featuring interviews and archival footage with friends and confidantes of the flamboyant producer, The Fabulous Allan Carr may be too reverent portrait of one of Hollywood’s inner members, highlighting the fact that Carr changed the face of American pop culture, specifically gay culture.
