Sidney J. Furie directed The Entity, a supernatural horror film, starring Barbara Hershey, Ron Silver, and David Labiosa.
AMOUR (Abandoned, Misunderstood, Overlooked, Underestimated, Revisited)
The film follows a single Los Angeles mother (well played by Barbara Hershey), who is raped and tormented by an invisible poltergeist-like entity in her home.
Adapted to the screen by Frank De Felitta from his 1978 novel of the same name, it based on the 1974 case of Doris Bither, a woman who claimed to have been repeatedly sexually assaulted by an invisible assailant.
In addition to paranormal elements, the film deals with sexual repression and assault, and single-parent households.
Despite being completed in 1981, the film went unreleased until the fall of 1982, when it was acquired by Fox and released in the UK. It was released in the U.S. on February 4, 1983.
The film grossed over $13 million at the box office against a $9 million budget and received moderately favorable critical reviews.
Over the years, it has gone on to receive further praise from contemporary film critics.
During its original release, it was met with some controversy due to its graphic depictions of female sexual assault, though the performance by Barbara Hershey was highly praised.
