In Death on the Nile, a lavishly produced by emotionally hollow screen version of Agatha Christie, Peter Ustinov plays detective Hercule Poirot, and David Niven is his colleague.
The mystery here is who killed Lois Chiles, the unpleasant heiress? Among the suspecrs are Mia Farrow, Bette Davis, Maggies Smith, Angela Lansbury, and George Kennedy, as a crooked lawyer.
Impersonally directed by John Guillermin, this 1978 thriller is produced by John Brabourne and Richard Goodwin, who also made Sidney Lumet’s Murder on the Orient Express, a more successful Christied adaptation.
Costumes by Anthonly Powell are lavish, all right, and on location cinematography by Jack Cardiff is wonderful, but the movie is dull and deliberately paced.
