Complete Unknown: Star Timothée Chalamet and Director James Mangold Visionary Tribute (Oscar Contenders?)

‘Complete Unknown’ Star Timothée Chalamet and Director James Mangold Visionary Tribute

The duo behind the upcoming Bob Dylan biopic will be honored alongside Denis Villeneuve, Angelina Jolie and the casts of ‘Sing Sing’ and ‘The Piano Lesson.’

Timothee Chalamet and his Complete Unknown director James Mangold will receive the 2024 Gotham Visionary Tribute for their Bob Dylan biopic.

The honor recognizes collaborations that push the boundaries of storytelling in film.

“Chalamet and James Mangold have beautifully captured Dylan’s emergence in 1960s New York not just as an artistic evolution, but as a meditation on the necessity of change,” The Gotham Film & Media Institute executive director Jeffrey Sharp said.

“Through Chalamet’s breathtakingly authentic performance and Mangold’s masterful direction, we witness Dylan’s transformation from folk prophet to electric rebel, showing how growth often requires letting go of the very relationships and identities that shaped us. Together, they have created a work that will not only resonate with longtime Dylan admirers but also introduce his revolutionary artistry to a new generation. We’re thrilled to honor them with this year’s Visionary Tribute and look forward to recognizing their outstanding contributions to film at The Gothams.”

Searchlight Pictures’ A Complete Unknown is set to hit theaters on December 25.

It stars Chalamet as a young Dylan, arriving in New York from Minnesota as an enigmatic 19-year-old. As he forms close relationships amid his increasing stardom, he grows restless with the folk movement and makes the controversial choice to go electric.

The movie, which was shot in New York City and New Jersey, also stars Edward Norton, Elle Fanning and Monica Barbaro and was written by Mangold and Jay Cocks, based on the book Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan and the Night that Split the Sixties by Elijah Wald.

Both Chalamet and Mangold are past Oscar nominees. Chalamet received a best actor Oscar nod for his role in Call My by Your Name and has starred in five best picture Oscar nominees: Call Me by Your Name, Lady Bird, Little Women, Dune and Don’t Look Up.
