Shot almost entirely within a seedy apartment, this psychodrama details the routine of Laura (Mónica del Carmen), a young freelance journalist, who lives ] isolated life in her small apartment, rarely venturing out besides bringing men home from nightclubs.
She never spends more than one night in bed with any of them, until she meets the quiet and inscrutable Arturo (Gustavo Sánchez Parra), and the pair enter into an intensely violent sexual relationship.
Set in February on a leap year, the story focuses on the evolution of their relationship. Laura is crossing out the days on a calendar, while revealing her secret past to her lover.
At first, Michael Rowe wanted the violence and sexual relations to be real, but during filming Gustavo Sánchez Parra proposed simulating some of these acts. As a result, Rowe changed his stance, and in the end, only two scenes were unsimulated.
The film premiered at the Cannes Film Fest section of Directors’ Fortnight on May 1 2010, followed by numerous showings in major film festivals.
