Giovanni Pastrone’s Italian silent epic was groundbreaking in its grandiose scale and radical use of a moving camera, pushing cinema forward technologically.
The narrative consists of a series of five episodes, chronicling the history of ancient Rome, adapted from Livy’s “Ab Urbe Condita.”
It is told through the eyes of an aristocratic girl, Cabiria (Carolina Catena), age 8, who’s believed to be missing (and is subsequently abducted) after Mount Etna erupts.
Scorsese screened a restored version at the 2006 Cannes Film Fest.
Cabiria made history as the first movie to ever be shown at the White House.
