Bergman Island: Mia Hansen-Løve’s Drama Premieres at 2021 Cannes Film Fest

Mia Hansen-Løve directed and wrote Bergman Island, a drama starring Vicky Krieps, Tim Roth, Mia Wasikowska and Anders Danielsen Lie.

The Premise:

A filmmaking couple go to the island where Ingmar Bergman was inspired. While there, the lines between reality and fiction begin to blur.

In May 2017, it was announced Greta Gerwig, John Turturro, and Mia Wasikowska joined the cast, with Mia Hansen-Løve directing from a screenplay she wrote.  In August 2018, Vicky Krieps had joined the cast, replacing Gerwig who had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. In May 2019, Tim Roth joined the cast.

Principal photography began on August 9, 2018, on Fårö, an island in Sweden.

It was released in France on July 14, 2021 by Les films du losange.

In June 2021, IFC Films acquired U.S. distribution rights, while MUBI acquired rights for UK and Ireland distribution.
