Basic Instinct (1992): Scandalous Scene–Sharon Stone’s Leg Cross

Basic Instinct (1992)

This notorious scene was director Paul Verhoeven’s off-script idea.

Sharon Stone claims that Verhoeven asked her to remove her underwear, as they were too bright and reflected light into the camera. Stone agreed under the condition that the shot wouldn’t be used in the final cut.

Verhoeven, on the other hand, states that he told Stone his intention, and that the scene was integral to her character’s wild playfulness.

She agreed, but after initial screenings, fearing that the scene might damage her career, Stone demanded that it be removed.

Regardless, it remains one of the most scandalous – and freeze-framed – moments in film history.

Sharon Stone was the 14th actress to be offered the lead role. Prior to that gig, she had been considering quitting acting to study law.

The sex scenes between Stone and Douglas were choreographed and shot over five days.

The film was originally given an NC-17 rating, with the uncut version released overseas and later on home video
