For almost as long as there have been movies, there have been movies about voyeurs – perhaps because the very act of moviegoing itself, of peeking in on the dreams, desires, and experiences of others, is an act of voyeurism.

It’s therefore no surprise that many of the greatest filmmakers in the history of the medium have sought to explicitly take on voyeurism as a subject.

This has enabled them to ask provocative questions about what it really means to watch and be watched, and how both voyeur and subject are altered by the act of watching.
