American Graffiti — “Green Onions” by Booker T. and the MGs
George Lucas soundtracked the film’s drag races in a nostalgic yet exciting manner. The cool of this Stax soul classic is a sonic shortcut to American Graffiti‘s 1962 era, a world of hot rods, diner pit stops and backseat romance.
The soundtrack to Lucas’ ode to the era’s pop and rock hits starts with Bill Haley & His Comets’ “Rock Around the Clock” and ends with The Beach Boys’ “All Summer Long.”
Securing rights to these songs cost so much that there was no money for traditional score. Elvis Presley is notably absent because he was too expensive.
