A Woman’s Tale (1991): Paul Cox’s Honest, Intimate Look at Last Days of Elderly Cancer Victim (AMOUR)

A Woman’s Tale (1991)

Directed by Paul Cox

The Australian drama A Woman’s Tale offers a bold, honest, intimate look at the last days in the life of an elderly cancer victim.

Director Paul Cox wrote the whole text specifically for lead actress Sheila Florance, an icon of Australian cinema, who was in fact dying of cancer as she played what was essentially a self-portrait.

In fact, Florance passed shortly after the movie was released.

Paul Cox (1940-2016) was a Dutch-Australian filmmaker, recognized as Australia’s most prolific film auteur.

He is perhaps best known for his 1984 Australian film, Man of Flowers, about an eccentric, reclusive, middle-aged man named Charles Bremer, who enjoys the beauty of art, flowers, music and watching pretty women undress.
