Question of Silence, A: Marleen Gorris’ Controversial Film

This controversial Dutch film, written and directed by Marleen Gorris in 1987, tells the story of three women who stomp, kick and pommel to death a male shopkeeper they have never met before.

The three women are meant to be ordinary: a beleaguered mother, a middle-aged woman who likes to knit, and a secretary who resents her male boss and is capable of working as a prostitute to demonstrate just how contemptuous of men she can be.

The female psychiatrist assigned to their case is first shown to be happily married, but gradually, she, too, begins to have serious doubts about her own marriage.

A Dutch film, with English subtitles.

Running Time: 92 minutes
