Emilia Perez: Entire Ensemble of Women (including Trans) Earned Best Actress at Cannes Film Fest 2024

Selena Gomez just earned a major award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. But Gomez actual shares the prestigious honor with her fellow cast-mates Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, and Adriana Paz.

Emilia Perez, which also took home the festival’s jury prize, received a 10-minute standing ovation following it’s Cannes premiere May 18. Directed by French filmmaker Jacques Audiard, the musical crime drama tells the story of a powerful cartel leader (played by Gascón) who seeks to transition and start a new life as a woman named Emilia Perez.

While Selena Gomez attended the Cannes Fest earlier this month, the actor was in New York City when the festival held its award ceremony on May 25.

In fact, she was enjoying a picnic in Central Park when Zoe Saldaña called her with the big news.

“I’m so excited,” Gomez told her cast-mate in the video posted on her Instagram Story.

In another post, she wrote, “Thank you SO much @festivaldecannes and the whole board.”

When asked about the jury’s decision to honor all four of the film’s leading ladies, Cannes jury president and Barbie director Greta Gerwig said singling out one winner would have “undermined the magic that they created together.” She explained, “Each of them is a standout but together they’re transcendent.”
