Ashes in the Snow (2019): Markevicius’s Tale of Art and Politics, Set during Siberian Deportation

Directed by Marius Markevicius, Ashes in the Snow is set during WWII, when an aspiring artist (Bel Powley), a teenager who’s 16, and her family are deported to Siberia amidst Stalin’s brutal dismantling of the Baltic region.

The girl’s passion for art and her to break the “silence of history,” makes this tale both historically and culturally significant.

Ben York Jones’ screenplay is based upon the novel Between Shades of Gray by Ruta Sepetys.
