Cal winds up falling in love with Marcella (Mirren), the widow of the man he had murdered.
Initially, the unhappy Marcella, who feels suffocated by her domineering mother-in-law and sick father-in-law, is unaware of Cal’s role in her husband’s death.
In the inevitable tragic ending, Cal is abducted by the IRA, but manages to escape. Pursued by the RUC to Marcella’s house, he is arrested and taken away.
As the heartbroken widow, Mirren excels as the sensual and conflicted woman falling into a forbidden romance. In one of the film’s emotional highlights, Marcella confesses that her marriage was not a happy one.
Decades after it was made, Cal‘s historical significance and emotional resonance are still very much evident,
