Film Independent handed out the 2021 Independent Spirit Awards on Thursday night, April 22.

The awards take place 3 days before Sunday’s Oscars. The show typically takes place the day before the Oscars in a daytime ceremony, but in a break from tradition, the show aired in a primetime ceremony three days before the Academy Awards, a move sparked by the pandemic.

Film Independent tapped Saturday Night Live cast member Melissa Villaseñor to host the Spirit Award, which are the nonprofit art organization’s primary fundraiser for its programs that support the careers of emerging filmmakers and promote diversity and inclusion across the film industry.

The show aired on IFC and AMC+ at 10 p.m. ET.

Heading into the show, Never Rarely Sometimes Always has a leading seven nominations, followed by Minari landing six noms and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Nomadland with five each.

All four films are nominated for best feature alongside First Cow.

Regina King’s One Night in Miami will be honored with the Robert Altman Award, which is given to one film’s director, casting director and the ensemble cast.

The 2021 nominations for the first time included nominees in several TV categories. Among the new categories are best ensemble cast in a new sripted series, which will be presented to I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel, Paapa Essiedu, Wruche Opia and Stephen Wight.

Winners are selected by members of Film Independent. The budget cutoff for eligible films is $22.5 million, which makes Oscar nominees like The Trial of the Chicago 7 ineligible.
