More than 400 members of the Hollywood entertainment industry signed letter written to President Joe Biden by Artists4Ceasefire, and some celebrities show their support for ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war on the Oscars 2024 red carpet by wearing pin from the same organization featuring an outstretched hand with a heart on it.

Stars who signed the letter include Jessica Chastain, Quinta Brunson, Richard Gere, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Lupita Nyong’o and Mahershala Ali.

Stars spotted wearing the Artists4Ceasefire red “Ceasefire” pin are such Oscar nominees as Billie Eilish, Finneas O’Connell and Mark Ronson as well as Ava DuVernay and Poor Things actor Ramy Youssef.

Best Supporting Actor Nominee Mark Ruff (Poor Things) is among those expected to wear the pin at Sunday’s Oscars as one of the stars most vocal about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the terrorist organization Hamas attacked Israel on October 7.

“Concerning the tragic events unfolding in Israel and Gaza, I am grief-stricken for the unspeakable suffering and loss of life and loved ones,” Ruffalo posted on October 9. “This horrific violence must end. I have no answers obviously, but I feel it is absolutely necessary to focus on our shared human existence and reality. The sanctity of our common humanity will hopefully serve to heal the unimaginable wounds of division.”

Artists4Ceasefire was organized on October 20 as a volunteer organization and opportunity for anyone in the artistic community to use their voice.

“We come together as artists and advocates, but most importantly as human beings witnessing the devastating loss of lives and unfolding horrors in Israel and Palestine,” the letter to President Biden, posted on the organization’s website and updated as of March 8, begins. “We ask that, as President of the United States, you and the US Congress call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost. More than 30,000 people have been killed over the last 5 months, and over 69,000 injured* — numbers that any person of conscience knows are catastrophic.” The asterisk is added to clarify the number of deaths and injuries as of the letter’s most recent update.

 

Stars have been wearing the red enamel lapel pin since the February 4 Grammy awards, where Annie Lennox and Phoebe Bridgers were among those who seen wearing the symbol of activism.

Joe Alwyn and Dua Lipa wore the pin to pre-parties in advance of the February 18 BAFTA Awards, while The Bear‘s Ebon Moss-Bachrach sported the pin at the February 24 SAG Awards.

Bring Them Home was another organization encouraging the use of lapel–yellow ribbon–to likewise bring attention to the conflict.
