Oscar Speeches: Douglas, Melvyn

Melvyn Douglas, nominated for Best Supporting Actor Oscar in Being There (1979)

When asked, “Will you be going to the Academy A ward ceremonies next week?” he answered:  “No. It has been said an actor has no chance against a child or an animal. Justin Henry’s up for Kramer vs. Kramer and Mickey Rooney’s up for The Black Stallion.”

As it turned out, despite stiff competition, Douglas did win the Oscar that night, adding a second statue to his first one, which he had won in 1963 for “Hud.”
