Oscar Speeches: Booth, Shirley (Come Back Little Sheba, Reprising Stage Role)

Shirley Booth won the 1952 Best Actress Oscar for reprising her acclaimed stage role in Come Back Little Sheba.

For Oscar night, her pink valentine dress had been cut especially so that she would not stumble.  But she did trip on the full skirt and fell down.

She quickly gathered herself and accepted the statuette.

All About Oscar

Time magazine, which put Shirley Booth on its cover, August 10, 1953, noted the Oscar incident, and pointed out also the similarities between Booth’s own life and her Oscar-winning role: “Childless in two marriages, Shirley has filled her life with pets, naming most of them after roles and phrases from her plays.”
