Binoche’s win was a major upset, a function of the sweep factor. Oscar gurus predicted that the award would go to the sentimental favorite, vet actress Lauren Bacall for her role in Streisand’s The Mirror Has Two Sides.

Binoche said: “I’m so surprised. It’s true. I did not prepare anything. I thought Lauren was going to get it, and I think she deserves it…This is a dream. It must be a French dream.”
