Oscar Speeches: Signoret, Simone–Room at the Top (1959)

Simone Signoret clutched her chest with nervous expectations when Rock Hudson announced the nominees in her category, Best Actress.

Declared winner for Room at the Top, Signoret kissed Hudson before saying: “I can’t say anything. I just wanted to be dignified and all that, but I can’t.”  The actress could not keep her dress straps from sliding off her shoulders. “You can’t imagine what it means to me, being French.”

Later on, when the news sank in, Signoret said about the Oscar show: “It looked like something I ‘ve seen in the movies.”
