Oscar Scandals: Chevalier, Maurice–

In 1958, the Academy’s Board of Governors voted a Special Honorary Oscar for vet French actor Maurice Chevalier “for his contribution to the world of entertainment for more than half a century.”

The Board denied rumors that there was a connection between the award and the fact that Chevalier failed to be nominated for Gigi, which swept most of the year’s nominations (9) and then won awards in each nominated category.

But it was probably a compensation for this oversight as well as for having lost the Best Actor in 1929/30, when he was up for two different films.
