Oscar: Ron Howard, Loser and Winner (Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind)

In 1995, Ron Howard failed to receive a Best Director Oscar nomination for Apollo 13, which was recognized, though the winner was Mel Gibson’s Braveheart.

Even so, under pressure from his producer Brian Grazer, he attended the show, based on his belief that “It would be awkward to be a no-show.”

In 2001, Ron Howard won Best Director for A Beautiful Mind, which also won Best Picture.

For Howard, “It’s really impossible to pick the best of any movie, or any kind of art form, but the Oscar is a great Hollywood tradition, and I love being part of it.”
