Oscar Politics: Stephen Schwartz–“Pocahontas”–Native Americans

Lyricist Stephen Schwartz collaborated with composer Alan Menken on the scores for the Disney animated features, Pocahontas (1995), for which he received two Oscar Awards, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996).

In his acceptance speech for the song “Color of the Wind,” from Pocahantas, Schwartz said: “I want to acknowledge my personal debt to the Native American poets and wisdom-keepers, who inspire my work on this project, most particularly in the case of the song, “Chief Seattle.”

He provided songs for DreamWorks’ first animated feature, The Prince of Egypt (1998), winning another Oscar Award for the song “When You Believe.”
