Oscar: Number of Films Nominated for Best Picture????

Wanna Guess?

The number of Oscar gurus is increasing rapidly every year, yet no one knows for sure how many films in toto have been nominated for the top award, the Best Picture Oscar, from the first year it was given, 1929 (for achievements in 1927-1928) to the present.

It seems like an easy question, but it is not. Though for most of this era, five films were nominated each year, the first decade of the Oscars saw years in which 8 or 10 films had been nominated. The issue became more complicated in 2009, when the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) decided to increase the field and allow up to 10 pictures to be nominated for the cherished prize.

Based on my research for All About Oscar: The History and Politics of the Academy Awards (first published in 1986 and now in its 11th edition, aboutoscar_multicolor to be updated for publication), we are conducting the first-ever methodical survey, counting the number of nominees year by year, title by title.
