Oscar Context

The first Oscar winner (for 1927 and 1928) was nominated for two awards, Best Picture and Engineering Effects, winning in both categories. It was directed by William A. Wellman, who had a distinguished career in the sound era, but was not nominated for this silent feature.

“Wings” competed against four other films for the Best Picture Oscar (then called Best Production), three of which were made by Paramount, “The Last Command,” The Racket,” and “The Way of All Flesh.” The fifth nominee was the Janet Gaynor vehicle, “Seventh Heaven,” made by Fox.
