In 1949, the War drama “Twelve O'Clock High” competed for the Best picture Oscar with the marriage satire “A Letter to Three Wives,” “All the King's Men,” which won, the family drama “The Heiress,” and another WWII film, “Battleground.”

The Best Actor winner was Broderick Crawford for “All the King's Men.” Gregory Peck would win the Oscar at his fifth nomination, for “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
