Oscar Movies: Substance (2024)–5 Nominations, 1 Award (Women Directors, Horror)

The Substance was nominated for five Oscar awards and won one, for Best Makeup and Hairstyling.

The Substance

It was nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Director for Fargeat, and Best Actress for Moore.

In the Academy’s entire history (97 years), only half a dozen horror movies have been nominated for the top award, most notably The Silence of the Lambs, which won the 1991 Best Picture Oscar.

Fargeat became the first woman to be nominated for writing and directing a horror film.

She’s the ninth woman to be nominated for directing overall in Oscars’ history, following in the footsteps of last year’s French nominee, Justine Triet, Anatomy of a Fall.
