In 1954, Marlon Brando won Best Actor for “On the Waterfront,” which also received the Best Picture. Grace Kelly was the surprise winner of the Best Actress for “The Country Girl,” depriving Judy Garland of kudos for her greatest dramatic performance.
The Art Direction Oscar went to “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” the Song Oscar to Jule Styne and Sammy Cohn for “Three Coins in the Fountain”; the Scoring Award to Adolph Deutsch and Saul Chaplin for “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers”; and the Costume Oscar to Sanzo Wada for the Japanese picture, “Gate of Hell.”
Many in the industry felt that George Cukor should have been nominated for Best Director.
