This was the last of Hitchcock's five Director nominations; the winner, however, was Billy Wilder for “The Apartment,” which also won art direction for Alexander Trauner and Edward G. Boyle.
Janet Leigh, in her only Oscar nomination, lost out to Shirley Jones in “Elmer Gantry.” The cinematography Oscar went to Brit Freddie Francis for the period drama, “Sons and Lovers.”
