Oscar Context

In 1982, Richard Attenborough's biopic “Gandhi” swept most of the important Oscars, including Best Picture and Director.

Producer-director Spielberg competed against himself, as “E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial” was nominated for multiple Oscars, including Best Picture. Composer John Williams also competed against himself and won the Oscar for “E.T.”, which garnered the Visual Effects and Sound Effects Editing awards.

Among other things, “Poltergeist” offered a role to the 1976 Supporting Actress winner, Beatrice Straight (“Network”), here playing a parapsychologist.
