In 1962, “The Music Man” was the only musical movie to vie for the Best Picture Oscar. The other nominees were: ” David Lean's “Lawrence of Arabia,” which swept most of the awards, including Best Picture, Art Direction, Sound, and Editing, “The Longest Day,” the remake “Mutiny on the Bounty,” and the Depression drama, “To Kill a Mockingbird.”

The Costume Oscar went to Mary Wills for “The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm.”
