Chinese director Chen Kaige's “Farewell My Concubine” is a visually impressive, emotionally complex historical epic. The film, which shared the Cannes Festival top prize, the Palme d'Or, with Jane Campion’s “The Piano, is always fascinating to watch, despite a running time of 2 hours and 36 minutes and other problems.

“Farewell My Concubine” was considered to be the front-runner, but lost out to Spain’s entry, “Belle Epoque.”

 

Janusz Kaminski won the Cinematography Oscar for Spielberg’s “Scchindler’s List,” which swept most of the awards in 1993, including Best Picture and Best Director.
