Oscar Context
In 2000, Ang Lee's blockbuster martial arts epic “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon” competed for the Best Picture with Ridley Scott's historical epic “Gladiator,” which won, two Soderbergh's films, “Erin Brockovich” and “Traffic,” and the schmaltzy romantic drama “Chocolat,” which was the weakest artistically.
Julia Roberts won the Best Actress for “Erin Brockovich” and Marcia Gay Harden the Supporting Actress for “Pollock,” in which she played the artist's long-suffering wife.
“Stephen Gaghan won the Adapted Screenplay Oscar for “Traffic.” “Crouching Tiger” won most of the technical awards, including Original Score for Tan Dun.
