Oscar Impact: Christie, Julie

Julie Christie's debut in John Schlesinger's “Billy Liar” (1962) earned her the meager amount of $3,000. In three years, however, her salary went up one hundred times. While for her 1965 Oscar-winning role in “Darling!” (also directed by Schlesinger), Christie was paid $7,500, for her next film, David Lean's “Doctor Zhivago,” she received $120,000.

In the late 1960s, Christie commanded $400,000 or a percentage of the film's grosses, whichever was higher.
