Oscar Impact: Balsam, Martin

The Oscar's cash value is enjoyed by all Oscar winners, lead and supporting actors. “All they wanted to know,” said Martin Balsam, the Supporting Actor winner for “A Thousand Clowns” (1965), “was how much more money I wanted for my next project.”

The scripts that Balsam received were more or less the same, but everything was reduced to money. As he puts it, “I became an exploitable item.”
