The real Maria von Trapp walks through the background in the number, “I Have Confidence.” Director Robert Wise decided to keep it a secret for years, partly because he didn’t like the stern, “bossy” femme.
But star Julie Andrews has said that while Maria von Trapp was certainly strong, she was also “sweet and pretty.”
Go figure.
