Mexican cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki won his second, consecutive BAFTA award. On Sunday, he received the cinematography award for Birdman, a year after getting the same honor for his work on Alfonso Cuaron‘s Gravity.
At the Oscars 2014, Lubezki won the cinematography award for his work on Gravity. He is also nominated for the Oscar this year.
News of the nine Birdman Oscar nominations, including for three Mexicans, directorAlejandro G. Inarritu, Lubezki and sound editor Martin Hernandez, elevates the status of Mexican artists.
There has been only one back-to-back Oscar winner in the cinematography category. John Toll won in 1994 and 1995 for Legends of the Fall and Braveheart, respectively.
Lubezki also served as director of photography on Terrence Malick’s Knight of Cups, which world premiered this week as the 2015 Berlin Film Fest.
