Oscar Directors: Arcand, Denys (Decline of the American Empire, The Barbarian Invasions

Georges-Henri Denys Arcand, born June 25, 1941, is a French Canadian director, screenwriter and producer.

His film The Barbarian Invasions won the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar in 2003.

His films have been nominated three further times, including two nominations in the same category for The Decline of the American Empire in 1986, and Jesus of Montreal in 1989.

He is the only French-Canadian director whose films have received so many Oscar nominations and who has actually won the Oscar Award.

The Barbarian Invasions also received Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination, but lost to Sofia Coppola for Lost in Translation.
