Streep Proved She Can Sing Well
A trained vocalist in her youth, Meryl Streep didn’t really share her singing skills until appearing in several musical films in the 2000s and 2010s.
Surprisingly, she lost the role of Eva Perón to Madonna in the big-screen adaptation of the musical Evita.
Of Madonna’s talents, Streep expounded to The New York Times, “I could rip her throat out. I can sing better than she can, if that counts for anything.”
But Streep’s time to shine would come when she starred in movie version of Mamma Mia! in 2008.
An infectious jukebox musical set to the music of ABBA, Streep belted out tunes like “Mamma Mia!” and “Money, Money, Money” without missing a beat.
Meryl Streep returned to the musical genre in 2014, starring as the Witch in “Into the Woods.” Singing Stephen Sondheim’s music required a different level of preparation for Streep. “I really worked hard to get my voice back,” she said at the Into the Woods premiere.
“I used to have a pretty good voice. And then, you know, when you’re in your 20s, you’re smoking and you’re an idiot, and you’re screaming at kids in your 30s.”
