Gay actor Robert Preston was nominated in the Supporting Actor category in 1982 for Victor/Victoria, in which he played a gay entertainer and Julie Andrews’ best friend and confidant.

This was the sole nomination for Preston, who made his screen debut in 1938.

Preston played on Broadway the titular role in “The Music Man,” for which he won a Tony Award.

He died in 1987

The winner of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar was Louis Gassett Jr, for An Officer and a Gentleman.
