Oscar Actors: Matthau, Walter–Popular Vote (for Two Films?)

In 1966, Walter Matthau won the Best Supporting Oscar for The Fortune Cookie, Billy Wilder’s serio comedy.

The win controversial as many perceived it as a lead role, similar in size and importance to that of Jack Lemmon’s.

In the marketing (and official poster) the names of both actors is above the film’s title.

Since he suffered a heart attack during the shoot, the Oscar was perceived as a sympathy vote as well.
