Oscar Actors: Laurie, Piper–The Hustler, Carrie

Piper Laurie was nominated for two Oscars, one lead, the other supporting, over a period of 15 years.

The first time was for the lead role in The Hustler in 1961, opposite Paul Newman.

In 1976, Laurie made an impressive comeback in Brian De alma’s Gothic melodrama, Carrie, for which she received the Best Supporting Actress nomination.

The lurid material, and Laurie’s role as Sissy Spacek’s obsessively fanatic mother, called for a stylized overacting and Laurie delivered, playing her eccentric part as a wicked witch in a dark fable.
