Oscar Actors: Harris, Barbara

Born Sandra Markowitz July 25, 1935 in Evanston, Illinois.

A leading actress of the American stage and occasional films, Harris came to New York in 1961 with Chicago's famous Second City improvisation troupe and went on to star in offBroadway and Broadway productions, winning a Tony Award in 1967 for her performance in Broadway's “The Apple Tree.” Harris also directed one Broadway production.

Her screen appearances have been infrequent but usually rewarding, including one in Hitchcock's last film, “Family Plot.”

She received a Supporting Actress nomination in 1971 for “Who Is Harry Kellerman, and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me” The winner, however, was Cloris Leachman in “The Last Picture Show.”
